The SBIR Road Tour Is Making Stops in Kansas City and Des Moines

Calling all innovators, entrepreneurs, researchers and small technology firms, the SBIR Road Tour is making a stop near you this May, with stops in Kansas City, Kan., on Tuesday, May 21, and Des Moines, Iowa, on May 22, 2019.

The events will convey the non-dilutive, technology funding opportunity provided through the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs.

What are SBIR grants?

If you’re looking for grants to help you move your innovative idea toward commercialization, SBIR and STTR grants could be your path. These grants fund high-risk research and development efforts with commercial potential. Small U.S. businesses are eligible to participate in the SBIR/STTR program if they are for-profit and have 500 or fewer employees. Nonprofit organizations are not eligible.

Examples of a few Missouri companies that have received funding through these programs include:

Applied Particle Technologies
Aware Vehicles
BioRankings
CoFactor Genomics
InnovaPrep
Kypha
Lickenbrock Technologies
MoSci
Nawgen
PatientsVoices
Professional Beef Services
Pulse Therapeutics
Thermvant
QM Power

An Opportunity for Missouri Innovation

Each year, federal agencies with extramural research and development budgets that exceed $100 million are required to set aside a portion of that funding to the Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer programs. Small businesses can compete for these funds.

However, Missouri business are leaving money on the table. According to the Missouri Chamber’s Technology 2030 Report, Missouri currently ranks at 37 out of 50 in winning these grants for Missouri innovation businesses.

How can Missouri companies better take advantage of this opportunity? Grab a spot on the SBIR Road Tour and then reach out to MOSourceLink to find resources in your area that can help with your grant application. Missouri’s SBDC at the University of Missouri-Kansas City is one such MOSourceLink Resource Partner that trains and counsels firms on successful grant applications.
